Butterbox Babies on Oprah! Efforts are underway to have the Butterbox Babies story featured on Oprah. Aside from the obvious importance of the story in terms of social history there are several aspects that I believe will interest the show's producers. One is the religious intolerance of the day that left childless Jewish couple out of the mainstream adoption process. The result being that hundreds of Canadian babies were adopted by and, in many cases, sold to Jewish couples in the United States. Those babies, now adults, are living all over the U.S. today and have fascinating life stories to tell.
Another important point: African-American/Canadian babies and "mixed race" babies were among those rejected from the Ideal Maternity Home's adoption process. Their contracts, which still exist today, specifically excluded these babies. There is no record of what happened to them ...but a butter box was their likely fate.
The proposal to air the story on Oprah has been submitted. If you feel so inclined to send an email as a show of support for the Oprah proposal go to: http://www.oprah.com

I believe they would be especially interested in hearing from "survivors" of the Home. Thank you very much - |
